The Institute

The Institute of Basque Studies was created in 1974, with support from the Biscay Regional Council. Since 2009, it has formed part of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Deusto.

Director's Welcome

Elixabete Perez Gaztelu
The people who make up the Institute of Basque Studies invite you to share this space of communication with us. Here we will try to offer you information on our aims, services, news on our work and research teams and on the main academic, research and outreach activities we carry out.

Our aim is to make the institute, now present on the two campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastian of the University of Deusto, a meeting point for researchers and scholars interested in gaining deeper insight into issues related to the Basque culture, in its widest sense. Indeed, the Institute’s very intrinsic features facilitate the multi- and interdisciplinary study of the Basque culture. In this regard, our aim is to support and encourage ongoing dialogue between the study of Basque culture and other cultures.

Ultimately, we would like this to be an open window on Basque studies.

Come and get to know us. Best regards,

Elixabete Perez Gaztelu
Director of the Institute of Basque Studies
