The aim of the Department of English Philology is to train top-level academic specialists in English. To be more precise, the profile of the graduate we hope to train is that of a professional
- who has complete mastery of the English language, especially in formal communication, with both the ability to produce and to understand good English,
- who has a rigorous knowledge of the language per se -that is, of the linguistic mechanisms which give structure to the language he is learning to use,
- who knows English literary texts and can read them critically, analysing them in regard to form, rhetorical structure, and the importance of the ideas they express,
- and who has a thorough knowledge of the cultural, social and historical background of the English-speaking countries, with a point of view which, stemming from our own sociocultural and historical background, enables him to communicate freely with the Anglosaxon world (on cultural and commercial matters, etc.).
