Master’s degree in Governance for Sustainable Urban Development - CITIES2030

Practical approach

The Master’s has a marked practical orientation, which enhances employability and professional performance. To this end, a KAIA Learning-Research-Action Method is proposed which, based on the Deusto Education Model, brings together Urban Innovation Laboratories, Internships and Master’s Final Projects in a linear, integral and integrated process.

KAIA Learning-Research-Action Method

The Master’s takes the Deusto Education Model as a reference, which aims to promote autonomous and meaningful learning through the development of phases involved in the teaching-learning process: contextualising (experiential context); reflecting (reflective observation); conceptualising (conceptualisation); experimenting (active experimentation); and assessing (assessment/feedback).

But beyond the Deusto Education Model, we advance in the KAIA Learning-Research-Action Method, which seeks, to involve students in the resolution of practical challenges/problems through classroom sessions, urban innovation laboratories, internships and master’s final projects, both in local environments and in international destinations, hand in hand with universities, institutions, companies and social entities.

Urban innovation laboratories

The transformative Urban Innovation Labs address the need to shape a governance model for achieving the sustainable urban development envisaged.

The Urban Innovation Laboratory is worth 6 ECTS credits that will be carried out in the framework of collaboration with other universities, institutions, companies and/or social entities.

Internships

The Internships for professional-research development make it possible to access cases in which to apply the proposed governance model, based on the theoretical principles and technical tools acquired.

The Internships for professional-research development subject is aimed at providing students with knowledge and practical skills related to governance for sustainable urban development, along with the Master’s academic coordinators. Depending on the professional and/or research orientation that students require for their training, they will be provided with a variety of internship options focused on challenges on cities, on projects linked to institutions, companies and/or social entities, with a professional or research focus.

The development of the above activities will be held both on the University of Deusto campus and at other universities with which appropriate agreements have been signed within a mobility framework, or at companies, institutions or social entities with which appropriate agreements have been signed.

Master’s Final Project

The Master’s Final Project is the result of a reflection and design process for an alternative proposal to some of the challenges posed in the internship period or throughout the master’s course. These credits will be taught during the second semester of the programme.

The 12 ECTS credits of the Master’s Project will be carried out within the same framework of collaboration with other universities, institutions, companies and/or social entities.

Partner Universities

In order to give the Master’s an international focus, we want to offer students the opportunity to have a mobility experience, preferably an international one, in the second semester of the Master’s:

  • Stay at international partner universities under Erasmus or bilateral mobility agreements.
  • Stay at institutions, companies or social entities, under Educational Cooperation and/or Erasmus Internships agreements.

They will study the second semester subjects at universities and institutions, companies or social entities abroad. In any case, students will defend their Master’s Final Project before an Academic Examining Committee at the University of Deusto. The Master’s has a network of agreements with leading universities in the field of Urban Studies and Cities Sciences.
